on new efforts to stop the deadly violence in the mideast. glad you are with us, everybody i'm jenna lee. jon: i'm jon scott. israel gears up for a ground offensive to combat the deadly hamas rocket attacks it too prefers a diplomatic solution to end the dry sis. all this as the death toll rises to nearly one hundred. israel appears to be stepping up its bombing campaign, launching air strikes at key targets in gaza, one hitting the immediate quarters of the palestinian national security forces causing a huge explosion with thick, black smoke seen over gaza city this morning. but hamas not letting up, firing hundreds and hundreds of rockets into israel over the past few days. 75 just today alone. israel's iron dome an antimissile battery intercepting 20 of them. reports today that one did hit a school in southern israel. thankfully, though, it was empty at the time. leland vittert live on the israel-gaza border for us now. leland. >> reporter: jon, we were at that school, there was no kids there, because they don't have snow days here, they have rocket days. today being one of them. behi

. the u.s. now part of efforts to hammer out a cease-fire in gaza as the fighting intensifies on both sides. good morning i'm jon scott. jenna: hi, everybody i'm jenna lee. air raid sirens wailing in jerusalem. [sirens blaring] jenna: you may hear those sirens, we don't hear them often over jerusalem. this is after hamas fired off a rocket aimed at the holy city. folks on your screen running for cover. word today that that rocket hit the west bank and thankfully didn't cause any injuries. the rocket, just one of the more than 1200 from hamas fired at the jewish state since a week ago. israel is targeting key hamas sites as well firing artillery shells into gaza today and going after rocket and mortar teams all along the border. all of this happening as president obama dispatched secretary of state hillary clinton to the mideast, in jerusalem, ramallah and gaza. we will start with leland vittert on the israel-gaza border. >> reporter: there are multiple reports from senior israeli officials that there will be a cease-fire deal some time in the next 12 hours. you would think that would

according to some right back into a recession. we are glad you are with us on this friday, everybody, i'm jenna lee. jon: i'm jon scott. president obama offering his opening bid to avoid the fiscal cliff but it's not going over well at all with republicans. house speaker john boehner saying no progress has been made in negotiations. mike emanuel is live on capitol hill now. what are the republican complaints, mike, and how are they pushing back at the president? >> reporter: senator john john cornyn who is a member of the rupp leadership says he thinks president obama wants to go over the fiscal cliff by proposing higher taxes, no spending cuts and no plans to save entitlements. with president obama going to pennsylvania today, the house republican whip, kevin mccarthy's office put out a video profiling a small business nearby in pennsylvania that would get hurt by a tax hike. >> i'm jerry gorsky from an engineering company. however good or bad we do is my income. this notion of $250,000 being top 2% or the wealthy people in america ignores the way most small businesses work in america.

, everybody. glad to have you with us. i'm jenna lee. rick: happy tuesday. i'm rick folbaum in for jon. controversy over the timeline of events over the petraeus investigation with members of congress wanting to know why the fbi didn't notify them and the white house until just recently when it began months ago. that investigation far from over. fbi searching the home of petraeus's alleged mistress, paula broadwell. after david petraeus resigned his post as america's top spy. the scandal is widening. the woman in yellow, jill kelly, alerting a friend of hers that works in the fbi to threatening e-mails she says she was getting turning out to come from broadwell, part of an investigation involving another high-profile member of the military. the top u.s. commander in afghanistan, john allen. the defense secretary leon panetta says the pentagon has launched an internal investigation into thousands of quote, inappropriate communications between general allen right there on the screen and that woman in yellow, kelly. chief intelligence correspondent catherine herridge live in washington. y
